The ode of the expatriate poet, Angela Costi (Angeliki Kostis) to the women who migrated from a village in Cyprus and worked in a Thomastown sewing factory, is highlighted with sound and image on the page of City of Melbourne.
The selected poem is entitled “Kinaesthetic Grace” and is included in Angela Costi's new poetry collection, «An Embroidery of Old Maps and New» (Spinifex publications).
This is one of three video-poems completed by the Cypriot-born Australian poet, in collaboration with director Faezeh Alavi, and the music group “Vardos”, as a result of the arts support programmes in the midst of pandemic.
These three poems recited by Angela Costi, highlight her Greek Cypriot heritage, her grandmother Maroula's skill in weaving lace, her mother's hard work in the sewing factory, but also the surreal world of «social distancing» imposed by the pandemic.
