The forest of Dadia in Lefkimmi Evros has turned into a fire pit, with fronts burning uncontrollably throughout the night.
As stated in the morning show of Open, “Hellenic Hour”, the journalist of DELTA TV, Katerina Kalenteridou, said that the area is not accessible by road, which contributes to the «suspicions of arson», as she said.
The fire, according to Ms.Kalenderidou, «has now moved to the core of the forest», in inaccessible places with particularly dense vegetation.
The forest of Dadia is a National Forest of rare biodiversity and, as Mrs.Kalenteridou stressed, after a meeting of the coordinating body, «it was decided to create fire zones at the feeders of birds of prey, so as to protect the area as much as possible». An anti-fire zone was also created around the perimeter of Lefkimmi, in order to protect the settlement.
Overnight battle with the flames
During the night, 102 firefighters with 4 hiking teams and 29 vehicles operated in the area. They were assisted by army engines and water trucks of the local authorities. «In the area, 30 additional vehicles with 100 firefighters from other regions of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace rushed to the area after 12 o'clock at night,» added Ms. Kalenderidou, while, with the first light of day, “they were thrown into the battle” and the aerial means.
Ms.Kalenderidou spoke of «unimaginable ecological disaster» in the area where the fire broke out, while she conveyed the concern of the Fire Brigade men for the fact that the fire started from such an inaccessible area. «In the area, there were no phenomena such as falling lightning like other times to justify such a situation,» he said.
