St. Pelagia: Better picture from the fire

On Wednesday morning, water drops by the Fire Department’s ground and air units resumed on the front line of the fire which occurred at noon on Tuesday in the area between Agia Pelagia and Agia Anastasia.

The fire quickly spread due to the strong winds that were blowing in the area; however, the timely intervention of government agencies limited the extent of the damage to a ravine just outside the community of Agia Anastasia. Late Tuesday afternoon, September 6, the fire subsided, while that same evening, infantry units arrived from Neapoli, Laconia, to reinforce the troops operating here and in preparation for the difficult night ahead.

The situation currently looks better. No active hotspots are visible, only scattered areas with heavy smoke. The entire force remains in the area for fear of the fire reigniting.

Since yesterday, 75 firefighters—including 4 ground crews and 10 vehicles—have been participating in the firefighting operation, while firefighting aircraft and helicopters are dropping water on the fire. Water tankers from the municipality are also providing assistance.
