In the presence of the Minister of Shipping and Island Policy Miltiadis Varvitsiotis, a large-scale search and rescue operation for 60 people on board a sailing vessel 43 nautical miles southwest of Pylos was completed.
They were 40 men, 11 women and 9 children who were picked up by a coastal patrol boat of the Coast Guard. All of them were safely transported to the port of Katakolon.
The 60 survivors were examined by a Red Cross team and will spend the night at the port authority's facilities. The Minister of Shipping and Island Policy, M. Varvitsiotis, was aware of the case from the very first moment, and was immediately at the Integrated Search and Rescue Coordination Centre of the Coast Guard - Greek Coast Guard, together with the Chief of the Coast Guard and other members of the service.
