Developments in local government in the Ionian Islands — and in this case, Kythira — over the long period from the time of Western European domination to the present day, are of particular historical, economic, social, political, ideological, and cultural interest.

Local government — as a political institution — examined in terms of research and evaluation, does not aim at the ahistorical expectation of reviving a reality that once existed, but rather directs attention to the perception of contemporary problems in politics, in the broad sense of the term, and an awareness of historical and social developments.

Curriculum Vitae of Charalambos Bambounis

Charalambos Bambounis was born in Adamas, Milos, Cyclades, in 1952 and studied at the Department of History and Archaeology of the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Athens. In 1998, he was awarded a doctorate in Modern Greek History and in 2009 he was elected Associate Professor in the Department of Primary Education at the University of Athens. He has also taught as a visiting professor at universities abroad. He is currently head of the “History and History Teaching – Folklore and Culture” program in his department's postgraduate studies program and director of the Social Sciences Laboratory in the same department. His writings mainly focus on the history of the 19th and 20th centuries, the history of institutions, historical sources, local history, the history of education, as well as theoretical and methodological issues in history.
