Life after Life is the story of the historical population of the Roms of Constantinople, through the personal narratives of the members of the Greek community. The latent power of state persecution throughout history - burdensome taxes and forced labor on religious minorities, the 1955 pogrom and the 1964 deportations of Greeks - shape the harsh memories of community members. The film is about what it means to live with the past in the present and how people make peace, their new hope.

The film was funded by the British Leverhulme Trust (Early Career Research Fellowship) awarded to postdoctoral researcher Gonul Bozoglu at Newcastle University (Newcastle University, 2018-2021) on the culture of memory of the Greeks of Istanbul. The research was awarded a University Innovation Award by the Newcastle University Institute for Creative Arts Practice, which contributed to the financial support for the film

The latent force of historic state persecution - ruinous taxes and forced labour for religious minorities, the 1955 pogrom, and the 1964 expulsions of Greeks - shape the worlds of memory in which community members live. The film is about what it means to live with the past in the present, and how people make their peace and new hope from a community memory of loss, displacement and difficulty.

“Yaşamdan Sonra Yaşam” belgeseli, İstanbul Rumlarını kişisel hikayeleri ve toplumsal ilişkileriyle anlatıyor. Rumlar, birçok baskı ve ayrımcılığa maruz kaldılar; 1955’teki Pogrom, meslek yasakları, “Vatandaş Türkçe Konuş” kampanyası ve Varlık Vergisi gibi uygulamalar nedeniyle acılı ve zorlu bir süreç yaşadılar. Rumlar, yirminci yüzyılın başında İstanbul nüfusununun yüzde 30’unu oluşturururken bugün bu oran, binde 1’in de altında seyrediyor. Rum nüfusununun hızla azalmasının en önemli nedenlerinden biri, 1964’te Yunan uyruklu Rumların sınır dışı edilmesidir. Bu uygulama Rum toplumunununun hafızasında derin izler bıraktı. Film, bu izlerin peşine düşüyor: Geçmiş yaşamların bugüne nasıl yansıdığını, geçmişte yaşananların bugün ne anlama geldiğini anlamaya çalışıyor. Onca acıdan, kayıptan ve zorluktan sonra; Rumların, barışa yaptıkları vurgu ve yarınlara duydukları umut öne çıkıyor.

Yaşamdan Sonra Yaşam: İstanbullu Rumlar filmi, 2018’den 2021’e kadar Newcastle Üniversitesi'nde Gönül Bozoğlu tarafından yürütülen İstanbul Rumlarının bellek kültürleri çalışması çerçevesinde Leverhulme araştırma bursu (Early Career Research Fellowship) aracılığıyla finanse edildi. Araştırma ayrıca, Newcastle Üniversitesi, Yaratıcı Uygulama Enstitüsü'nden (Institute for Creative Practice) film için ek fon sağlayan Pioneer ödülünü aldı.
