Hyp. Mayor of Kythera Antikythera

PRESS RELEASE
Following the revealing reports of Adelin FM and KytheraNews which present the situation around the forest of Potamos with irrefutable evidence, the candidate for Mayor of Kythera and Antikythera, Zacharias Souris, made the following statement:
«With strong feelings of anguish and disappointment, we became aware of the illegal landfill that is only a few meters away from the beautiful forest of Potamos.
Next to the forest there are volumes of dry fuel, and uncontrolled dumping of sewage is also taking place.
We all see once again the inefficiency of Mr. Harhalakis and the Municipal Authority.
We find that this inefficiency «generates» risks for the environment and the inhabitants of our islands.
We find that the journalistic investigation reveals (with video and photos) something that the competent bodies should have already known and dealt with.
Yesterday, Mr. Harhalakis announced «that it is prohibited for citizens to place any object outside the large River trash cans until they are emptied.».
Very good ban, but why didn't he bother to apologise for the unjustified delay in emptying the bins before that?;
Why didn't he foresee them being emptied before the situation even got out of hand?;
I wonder if he doesn't know what the sight of the trash and recycling bins was on Sunday morning at the turn across the street from the high school building?;
We have at our disposal photographic material that illustrates the unacceptable situation in the cleaning sector.
In the heart of the tourist season we deeply regret that our island is in danger of being discredited. With sincere anxiety we await the immediate actions of the Municipal Authority.
However, our islands can no longer operate on automatic.
Solutions are needed now, before it is too late. Our combination will defend the good reputation of our islands with action, not fanfare.
We demand that all the necessary measures to protect and restore nature in the River Forest be taken immediately.
We demand that the cleaning service be strengthened to function properly.
There is no room for complacency and hiding the problems that are «overflowing» before our eyes...
