Founding Declaration

We are here. We live together We love our place. We share a lot.

We are active citizens, seeking to improve the standard of living and quality of life of the citizens of KYTHORES and ANTYTHORES.

We are conscious citizens, well aware that nothing will change unless we change first..

We are a diverse group of people who, despite our differences, what unites us is more important and much more than what may divide us. Our common «belief» is that our islands can and must change course and acquire a new face.

We live in Kythera and Antikythera. Whether we were born here, or we are more «fresh», we perceive and feel them as the our place. We believe that our islands have the potential to become functional and sustainable, to develop in a balanced way and to support the lives of their inhabitants in an inclusive way. We want a municipality that works for its citizens.

However, in recent years we have experienced a continuous decline. Every day we see problems and dysfunctions that make our islands unable to meet the needs of their inhabitants.

Those who manage or have managed their fate have failed to provide effective and lasting solutions to critical problems. Not only have they failed to improve our quality of life, putting our islands on a sustainable development path, but they leave them weakened, traumatised and devalued in the eyes of our citizens.

With no vision, no knowledge, no desire, but above all no plan for innovative changes, with the «common sense» absent, and with the sole aim of satisfying petty interests, the result was without doubt disastrous. We have seen a loss of time, resources and momentum, all sacrificed on the altar of recycling old concepts and practices that continue to plague our islands and keep them stuck in the past.

We realise that our own indifference or unwillingness to get actively involved in the public sphere allows what we are not satisfied with to continue. We have therefore decided not to settle for this downward trend. To take the lead in the effort for active participation in the events of our island. To change what hurts us and what we do not deserve. The time has come to take action. We start with the creation of the Active Citizens Group:

«We change» means that we are NOT satisfied with the findings. We do NOT simply express discontent. We do NOT limit ourselves to protest and denunciation.
«Change» means that we do NOT CHANGE THE OLD. Instead, we are BRINGING THE NEW.
«Changing» means leaving behind party barriers and entrenchments. We are erasing «labels» and anchors of the obsolete «yesterday». We work together for a truly better «tomorrow».
«Change» means that we stop talking about the citizens and talk to the citizens.
«We are changing» means that we are moving forward by adopting a realistic and feasible proposal for our islands
«Change» means abandoning the logic of management and adopting a development path.

We are the first to change, to put our ideas and proposals into practice.

We invite everyone and everyone individually to share our thoughts. To exchange ideas. To join forces to finally see our islands radically change. With open and honest dialogue and with the widest possible participation. We seek the synthesis that arises from positions and oppositions. We seek to meet and work together with anyone and everyone who cares about our islands.

So let's move on:

With courage, honesty, trust and selflessness.
With respect to the possibility of all views contributing to the effort for democratic composition in the decisions and actions of the Municipality
With absolute transparency in every action and activity of our Municipality, with open procedures and with strengthening the role of local councils always within the framework of the law.
Drawing on everyone's professional, social and voluntary experience.
With respect and contribution of all opinions and effort for democratic composition in the decisions and action of the Municipality

We sincerely believe that for every problem there is a solution. As long as there is a will, an organized plan and competent human resources with a willingness to offer.

ΒThe civil and non-negotiable priorities are:

Upgrading the quality of life of our island with equal opportunities for citizens.
Creating a «sustainable and resilient island entity» that respects the environment and its citizens.
Exploiting all the possibilities offered by our digital era to transform our Municipality into a transparent, democratic, consistent and effective organisation.
Utilising the appropriate financial instruments making the Municipality an essential driver of development for All.
Priority and emphasis on the sustainable productive reconstruction of our islands in all sectors. That is, in the Primary Sector (Agriculture), Manufacturing (Value Added Exploitation) and in the Tertiary Sector with emphasis on offering quality services in Tourism (Agrotourism, Religious and Cultural), without ignoring the other profitable sectors of our Tourism.
Creating friendly conditions to foster entrepreneurship.
Shaping our future, with our fellow citizens, without selective practices and shapely exclusions of those who express a different opinion.

Our islands absolutely need the participation of all of us!
