Danger level 3 with extreme temperatures, which have significant health effects, is predicted by the METEO unit of the National Observatory of Athens today for Athens and on Friday for Athens, Thessaloniki and Larissa. Also, today in Thessaloniki and Larissa a risk level 2 with extremely high temperatures is expected, and in Patras a risk level 1 with very high temperatures.
On Friday, Patras will have a risk level 2 with extremely high temperatures and Ioannina will have very high temperatures (level 1).
In addition, a significant increase in the flammability of dead forest fuels is expected in our country in the coming days due to the gradual prevalence of very hot and dry conditions. Under these fire weather conditions (hot and dry weather), dead forest fuels shed moisture, dry out and eventually facilitate fire initiation and spread.
The METEO unit of the National Observatory of Athens, in cooperation with the scientific committee of the Arsht-Rock Resilience Center of the Atlantic Council Foundation, applies operationally the categorization of days with high temperatures for six major cities of the country (Athens, Thessaloniki, Larissa, Ioannina, Patras and Heraklion). The categorisation system is based on an algorithm for predicting the impact of upcoming high temperature days on the health of residents of the six cities. The algorithm takes into account, in addition to temperature, other parameters that affect human thermal sensation, such as humidity and wind. The categorisation includes four classification categories (0-1-2-3), where 0 is high temperatures with risks to vulnerable people and 3 is extreme temperatures with significant health risks.
