A low-pressure system in the Adriatic Sea, accompanied by frontal activity, is moving southeast and is expected to cause a deterioration in the weather from tomorrow afternoon, with rain and thunderstorms in most areas and strong winds in the Aegean Sea. Snow will fall in the mountains, while on Saturday (16/12) it will also snow in low-altitude areas of northern Greece. The drop in temperature will be most noticeable on Saturday, when it will fall by 6 to 8 degrees Celsius in central and northern Greece.
In detail, according to the emergency weather report issued by the National Meteorological Service
A. Heavy rain and storms are forecast:
a) Starting tomorrow afternoon in the west, central and northern mainland and gradually in the central and northern Aegean.
b) From Saturday morning, the phenomena will subside in the west, but in the east (mainly in the Sporades, Thessaly, Euboea, the northeastern Aegean, and possibly Chalkidiki), the phenomena will remain intense until the afternoon.
c) After Saturday afternoon, the severe weather will be limited to the eastern Aegean Sea and the southern coastal areas, while during the night it will weaken in these areas as well.
B. Snowfall will occur:
a) From tomorrow at noon in the mountains of Central and Northern Greece, while in the evening it will snow in the semi-mountainous areas of Macedonia and Thrace. On Friday night into Saturday, it will also snow in the mountains of the islands of the northeastern Aegean.
b) On Saturday, snowfall will continue in the mountains and semi-mountainous areas of Central and Northern Greece, while in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace it will snow even in low-lying areas. Snowfall is expected to ease off in the evening.
C. Stormy northeasterly winds will blow:
a) On Saturday, initially in the central and northern Aegean and from midday throughout the Aegean, 8 and locally 9 Beaufort.
b) On Sunday (17/12), stormy north winds will remain at 8 Beaufort until noon, gradually weakening in the afternoon.
D. Frost will occur over the weekend in northern Greece, with locally heavy frost in the northwest on Sunday.
