The Deputy Mayor of the municipality of Thessaloniki George Avarlis was arrested by the internal affairs Security Corps as a private accountant accused that together with his colleague and a tax inspector received «envelopes» (marked banknotes) to close a businessman's case.
The three accused gave explanations to the Criminal Prosecutor and allegedly demanded money from the businessman, who reported the case to internal affairs. The prosecutor prosecuted the case on felony charges of criminal organization, extortion, bribery and breach of duty.
The case is not related to a case of Municipality of Thessaloniki but it's personal and involves the deputy mayor's accounting office.
The deputy mayor's accountant reportedly denies Category and claims that the marked money collected from his assistant was his fee.
George Avarlis will remain in custody until Saturday, when he will answer to a special investigator following the felony charges against him.

The Mayor of Thessaloniki accepts the resignation submitted by the Deputy Mayor of Operational Planning, e-Government and Migration Policy George Avarlis on the occasion of a court involvement in a private case.
