The Citizens“ Movement of Kythira ”DYNAMO" the approval of Special Environmental Study (SES) 7a by Petros Varelidis, Secretary General for Natural Environment and Water at the Ministry of Environment and Energy. The EPM establishes a special protection regime for the Natura 2000 areas of Kythira and, according to the Movement's press release, automatically cancels 22 of the 30 wind turbines of the plan TERNA ENERGY which were planned within the protected land areas.
«A very important development»
As stated in the announcement:
«The much-anticipated approval of EPM 7a, which prohibits the installation of industrial wind farms in the island's Natura 2000 Network terrestrial areas, is finally a reality! The 22 of the 30 wind turbines in the TERNA complex are theoretically automatically canceled!»
The Movement emphasizes that the struggle does not end here, as there are still 8 wind turbines located outside Natura areas and also require legal and social pressure to prevent their implementation.
Political and legal precedent
The approval of EPM 7a comes to establish protection zones, specific prohibitions and conditions for land use, creating strong precedent against the arbitrary installation of RES in ecologically sensitive areas. This action could serve as a tool for controlling the relevant licenses issued by RAE and legally reinforce the appeals already pending before the Council of State.
The struggle continues
The Movement's announcement concludes meaningfully:
«The only battle that is lost is the one that is never fought!»
The message is clear: the citizens of Kythira are not resting on their laurels, but continue to defend the landscape, biodiversity, and future of the island against the threat of industrial exploitation of nature.
Next steps
- Expected issuance of a Presidential Decree which will specify zoning and uses within Natura areas.
- The monitoring of licensing procedures for the remaining 8 wind turbines.
The approval of EPM 7a constitutes a turning point in the Kythira struggle for their environmental integrity, amplifying the voice of citizens who have been campaigning for years for an island free from industrial interests.

THE FIGHT CONTINUES!!!!
