A question was tabled by Anne. The Minister of Rural Development of SYRIZA-PS, Olympia Teligioridou and the Section Chief, Stavros Arachovitis, co-signed by 30 more MPs, to the Minister of Rural Development & Food on the false promises of the ND government to support farmers due to the explosive increase in feed prices.
The financial support for the purchase of animal feed for which the government of the New Democracy has been committed for months to Greek farmers, who are now unable to meet their financial obligations due to the sharp increase in prices of animal feed, energy and other raw materials, while at the same time they see their subsidies cut by OPEKEPE.
There is an urgent need to take appropriate measures to support livestock farmers, as the sector is in danger of economic decline and extinction, and livestock farmers will no longer tolerate mockery and demand practical support.
The Government and the Ministry must implement their commitments to support Greek farmers to subsidise the cost of buying feed and stop making a mockery of Greek producers.
The question of the MPs of SYRIZA - P.S.
QUESTION
To the Minister of Rural Development & Food
Subject: «Government's promises of support for livestock farmers due to the explosive rise in feed prices are false»
Greek livestock farms constitute an important sector of our country's primary production, producing products internationally recognised for their quality and comparative advantages.
Greek livestock farmers, facing perhaps their most difficult production year, are in a desperate situation as the rally in feed prices threatens the survival of the sector, leading them to a financial dead end.
The dramatic increase in feed prices (soya, maize, cereals, etc.), market distortions, rising energy costs, climate change with extreme weather events, natural disasters and the pandemic situation make life difficult for farmers who see their production costs rising, without this increase being accompanied by a corresponding increase in the prices at which they sell their products.
For months now, the Government and the Ministry of Rural Development have pledged financial support to farmers for the purchase of animal feed but once again they seem unable to deliver on their promises. The small funds initially announced by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development have brought reactions from all sectors of the livestock industry.
The mockery of the Ministry of Agriculture, indifference, weakness and inability to find resources to relieve their producers are leading them to financial ruin and annihilation and do not allow them to continue their activity.
Because, the need to feed farmed animals is immediate,
Because, the conditions under which the free market operates should not be an excuse for not taking measures to protect producers,
Because, production costs have risen sharply mainly due to the increase in feed prices,
Because, livestock farmers are under multiple stress from a variety of factors such as climate change, natural disasters, rising energy costs, pandemics, etc.
Because, if appropriate measures are not taken immediately to support livestock farmers, the sector will collapse and the production of Greek livestock products will be dramatically reduced,
Because, the Greek livestock farmers are no longer tolerating the mockery and are demanding practical support from the Greek Government,
The Minister asks the Minister:
How and when does the government of the New Democracy intend to implement its commitments to support Greek farmers in subsidizing the cost of purchasing animal feed?;
