By decision of the Mayor (a / a / a 307/2025), the Municipality of Kythera officially established Working Group for the monitoring of the preparation of the Local Urban Plan (LUP) of the island. This move is a continuation of the processes that have already started since 2024 in the context of the relevant study being implemented by a large consortium of consulting firms.
The Working Group, which is intended to have a mainly advisory and monitoring role, consists of:
- The Head of Technical Services of the Municipality of Kythera, Konstantinos Stathis (President)
- The Municipal Councillors Niko Magoula, Paraskeva Georgila and Andrew Mariato
- The Vice-Chairman of the Domestic Property Committee, George Megalokonomo
The Local Urban Plan of Kythera & Antikythera is considered a project of key importance for the spatial development of the islands, as it will define:
- land use
- protected and buildable zones
- special regimes for traditional settlements
- building conditions in coastal, rural areas, tourist centres and facilities.
The Working Party is invited, inter alia, to monitor the compatibility of the proposed arrangements with the needs of local communities and submit proposals to the City Council and the Mayor. The procedure will be completed with the adoption of the relevant Presidential Decrees, which is expected to give Kythera for the first time a fully modern and institutionally enshrined spatial planning tool.
Sub-thematic consultations with local communities are expected in the coming period. The public dialogue on the TSP will be the big bet to ensure real participation and acceptance of the plan by the island's residents and stakeholders.
