In 2021, the largest project will be put into trial operation Waste Management PPP in Greece, as announced by the MINISTRY OF ENVIRONMENT, the construction of the project for the Integrated Waste Management of the Peloponnese begins immediately. This paves the way for the zeroing of the fines paid by the country for the Peloponnese.
In particular, as it was announced by the Ministry of Environment, on Friday, the following agreements were signed between the Region of Peloponnese and the contractor company “Environmental Peloponnese”, the contracts under which the construction of this project will start.
As announced, the largest waste management PPP project in the country will reduce the environmental footprint and will have multiple developmental and social benefits for the Peloponnese Region.
The total investment amounts to €135 million, of which €62.5 million comes from a grant from the ESPA. The contract provides for the construction and operation of three Waste Treatment Plants (WTP) and three Landfill Sites (LDF) in Arcadia, Messinia and Laconia, as well as two Waste Transfer Stations (WDS) in Corinthia and Argolida.
The waste management capacity is 200,000 tonnes per year, of which 130,000 will be mixed waste and 70,000 organic waste.
Present at the signing of the contracts were the Deputy Minister of Development, Nikos Papathanasis, the Secretary General of PPP, Orestis Kavalakis and the Secretary General of Waste Management Coordination of the Ministry of Environment, Manolis Grafakos.
In fact, as Mr.Grafakos stated, «the greatest proof of our country's will to escape from the last positions in the EU for waste management is the implementation of the project in the Peloponnese». He expressed confidence that «in two years we will have the result we want and we can safely say that this Region will manage its waste in an exemplary way, with modern facilities and infrastructure, following the European directives, faithfully following the separate sorting that can support this project».
As it was announced, the project will enter into trial operation in 2021 and its construction will be completed in 24 months. It will provide a long-term solution to the problem of waste management in a region that has only one legal Landfill Site and for which our country is burdened with fines of 1.7 million euros per year due to the 21 Uncontrolled Waste Disposal Sites that were operating in the past.
As noted in the announcement, «the Ministry of Environment and Energy in close cooperation with the Ministry of Interior managed after coordinated actions to resolve the serious problems that existed in the financing and had put in doubt the implementation of the investment.».
N. Papathanasis: we finally solve the problem of waste management in the Peloponnese
The Public-Private Partnership (PPP) project «Integrated Waste Management of the Peloponnese Region», between Environmental Peloponnese, a company of the Terna Energy Group and the Peloponnese Region, came into force today.
As he says in a post on twitter the Deputy Minister for Development and Investment Nikos Papathanasis: «Signed today, in the presence of the regional governor of the Peloponnese Panagiotis Nika, the Secretary General for Private Investment and PPPs Orestis Kavalakis and the Secretary General for Waste Management Coordination Manolis Grafakos, the launch of the €150 million Peloponnese waste management PPP contract with 600 jobs in construction and 200 in operation. We are finally solving the problem of waste management».
