The residents of Soufli express the strong dissatisfaction after the recent announcements of the government for the reconstruction of Evros, which they consider ineffective and degrading for their region. The expectations of the people of Souflion were high, as they were expecting bold measures that would address the problems of underdevelopment and demographic. On the contrary, the measures announced are considered by local stakeholders as insufficient, creating wave of reactions.
Η Coordinating Action Committee, set up to organise the claim fight, has already taken the first decisions on actions. In protest, from Tuesday 15 October, black flags were placed at the junctions of the settlements of the Municipality of Soufli and along the highway, while it is planned to large protest rally on Friday 18 October at the central square of Soufli at 11 o'clock in the morning.
The joint text released by the Coordination Committee describes the great disappointment of the local community, which, after years of continuous crises, feels neglected and ignored by the Central Administration. As they point out, the their requests for development of the region are clear and have been submitted repeatedly to bipartisan committees, but to no avail.
The mobilisation has unifying dimension, as it is supported by local actors, such as farmers, farmers, students and professionals, and has taken on the character of social cohesion and dynamic resistance. The central slogan of the mobilization is that the residents of Soufli “deserve more“, and invite all local MPs to attend the meeting to explain their positions on the area.
The outrage is building as residents see the public services to be closed one after the other and are concerned that, without immediate and effective interventions, the same future will await the schools their. The Coordinating Action Committee stresses that the voice of Soufli must be heard out loud and to join to bring the necessary change to the region.
The message of the youth is shocking, as the young people of Soufli stand by the mobilisations, demanding justice and equal opportunities for their region. The video they created is being released with the slogan “#We deserve_more“, sending a strong message to the government.
Η Friday's gathering is expected to have mass participation and local stakeholders hope that the dynamic presence will force the government to reconsider the measures for the Soufli region.
