Siimera celebrates the greatest early Christian monument of Kythira. On the hill of Paliocastro, where was the ancient capital of Kythera, the Upper Kythera of Thucydides with the famous Temple of Aphrodite, there's the Church of St. Cosmas, which belongs to the 7th century and has embedded architectural parts made of ancient building material. From the entrance of the temple you can see columns from the temple of Aphrodite.
In the view of the Slimane, the Christian temple was built on the site of the ancient temple, but the temple of Aphrodite was a short distance away, at the site of the «Columns». In later years the church was a part of the Pretribal church of St. George of Matata and householders of the temple were the Prinea-Lutzi family.
