New strong earthquake size 5,9 points of the scale Richter occurred on Thursday night in Elassona, according to the preliminary assessment of the Geodynamic Institute of the National Observatory of Athens.
The epicenter of the vibration is located 16 kilometers southwest of Elassona, in the same area where the 6 Richter earthquake occurred on Wednesday. The focal depth is estimated at 11.3 km. According to information from SKAI, two houses collapsed.
The earthquake was felt in Thessaly, Achaia and Attica.
Five kilometers north of the original earthquake, located the epicenter of the new strong aftershock of 5.9 Richter in Elassona, according to the professor of seismology Efthymio Lekka, who spoke to SKAI 100.3 radio.
Mr.Lekkas stressed that there is a shift of seismic activity in the same fault branch towards Elassona.
Asked whether such activity was expected, he replied in the negative.
«No, there is no such provision. It was kind of weird to have this development. We have to evaluate it in the next period,» the professor said.
In his statements to ERT he said that another branch of the rift was activated. «We are dealing with a new branch of the fault and the good news is that it is leaving the residential areas
We didn't know this branch of that fault. It can be classified as a aftershock but we need to see the evolution of the phenomenon to see if another branch of the same fault is activated,» he said.
