The SYRIZA – PS Kythira supports with absolute clarity and determination the proposal to extend the airport runway. This is a necessary and essential prerequisite for the tourist and economic development of our islands, while also contributing to a greater sense of security and health.
The SYRIZA-PS Kythira organization denounces the failure to fulfill the commitment officially undertaken by the Regional Governor of Attica, Mr. Hardalias, to include the extension of the runway in the Region's executable projects. In 2024, the government's chosen Regional Governor had set as a prerequisite for the implementation of the project either a decision by the Municipal Council of Kythira or a recommendation by the opposition party «Attikos Kyklos.» Both happened: the Kythira Municipal Council unanimously decided to request the runway extension. The «Attikos Kyklos» faction did the same.
Unfortunately, at the Special Meeting of the Attica Regional Council on December 19, 2025, the regional governor suddenly raised issues of environmental protection. We note that the protection of Natura 2000 areas does not preclude the operation of airports, as is the case with many Greek and international airports, such as Munich, Larnaca, Corfu, etc.
The SYRIZA-PS Kythira supports the widespread demand of the people of Kythira for the extension of the airport runway. It calls on the Regional Governor to stop playing with the future of our islands. It also calls on the authorities of our islands to demand the implementation of the project.
