The first large-scale “experiment” for the urban use of hydrogen will soon be implemented in Western Macedonia. A village or a town selected by the Public Enterprise for Gas Distribution Networks (DEDA) will be transformed into a “hydrogen village” in order to study under real conditions the production, transport and use of hydrogen for urban consumption and electricity generation.
As BPA's CEO Marios Tsakas points out to APE-MPE, the project symbolizes the beginning of the new era of hydrogen, which in the coming years is expected to further penetrate electricity generation and transport, replacing natural gas and conventional liquid fuels. The main advantage of hydrogen is that its use produces no pollutants, only water vapour, while the disadvantage at present is its high cost and difficulties in production and transport.
