«Be careful not to get caught in Paleochora at night: a Kythirian experience»

Back in Athens for a few performances at the Avaton Theatre, from 18 to 21 September and from 25 to 28 September.

After its successful run in May in Athens and in August in Kythera, the play «Be careful not to get caught in Paleochora at night: a Kythirian experience» returns again to Athens, for a few performances at the Avaton Theatre.

Starting with the series of narratives in podcast form of the myths and legends of Kythera, which is already available on spotify and after the presentation of the play in Athens and Kythera, the play again gives the opportunity to even more viewers to experience a mysterious journey to the island and its metaphysical world.

This unique immersive sound performance unfolds in total darkness, where the eyes are «silenced» and the narrative unfolds like a ritual, dressed with 3D soundscapes representing the eerie passage of ghosts, the enchanted song of the fairies, the gallops and eerie cries in the ravines, the crying of unbaptized babies in the valleys and the deafening noise of the «xenola», the battalion of elves and demons that marches at night, a legend created by the echo left in the collective unconscious by the raid of the pirate Barbarossa.

The director Eliza Soroga inspired this unconventional approach to Kythirian legends and beliefs, utilizing the capabilities of three-dimensional recording (binaural recording). The recordings are accompanied by original soundscapes recorded in the legendary location of Kythira (especially for this project) and compositions by internationally renowned sound artist and electronic music composer Jeph Vanger.

At the heart of the performance, the sensational performance of the protagonist Sophia Seirli, who died suddenly during the course of the project. Her voice will remain alive, now inextricably linked to the intangible cultural heritage of the island.

The project «Beware lest thou be darkened in Paleochora» is a sonic journey into the world of the legends of Tsirigos, bringing the past into the future, while keeping the elements of its cultural identity unchanged. A new way of telling stories, listening to places and remembering those who have passed and left their imprint.
