The right wing has always been pro-royalist. The same was true of its leaders. However, in the 1960s, Constantine Karamanlis clashed with the then royal couple, Paul and Frederica, on various occasions and left Greece.
Karamanlis understood what the Throne was. And as soon as he returned, after the collapse of the dictatorship in 1974, organized the referendum, which abolished the institution of the monarchy. On the evening of the referendum, after the results were announced, Karamanlis declared: «A cancer has been cut out of the body of the nation today.
This cancer was represented by Constantine. And it is a big lie that he accepted the result of the referendum. On the contrary, conspired to overthrow Karamanlis in a coup.
The plan even included his assassination. This is revealed in documents held in the Karamanlis Archive and recently published in the newspaper Kathimerini.
