He lost the battle «General» of Panathinaikos and the national team at the age of 83.
A veteran legend of Greek soccer, he stood out on Greek soccer fields throughout his career.
It's worth noting that the Greens' veteran attacking midfielder celebrated his birthday, on January 22, the day he suffered a cardiac arrest.
The great soccer player was hospitalized and on a ventilator at the «Red Cross» Hospital» after suffering a heart attack while walking in the Halandri area.
The time elapsed from the moment Mimi Domazos suffered a cardiac arrest until he was revived at the Red Cross outpatient clinic was a decisive factor in his health condition, according to the medical report. The hospital administration provides the following detailed information:
«The well-known former soccer player Mimis Domazos, despite having exhausted all treatment options It ended today, Friday, January 24, 2025, at 10:20 a.m. a.m. because of multiorgan failure. Unfortunately, the time elapsed between the out-of-hospital cardiac arrest and his readmission to the Outpatient Clinics of our hospital turned out to be determinant. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his wonderful family—his three daughters, his wife of 40 years, and everyone who loved him.».
The «legend» of Greek soccer
Mimis Domazos, one of the greatest figures in Greek soccer, was born on January 22, 1942 in Athens.
He grew up in Patisia, where his love for the game led him to the streets and then to Panathinaikos, where he would go on to make history.
He joined the men's team in 1959 and remained there a loyal member of the club for over two decades, apart from a brief stint at AEK (1980–1981). With 502 appearances and 134 goals in the Greek league, Domazos became synonymous with soccer genius. The nickname «The General» was not given to him by chance, as his ability to «reads» the game and his ability to dish out assists made him irreplaceable.
Η The highlight of his career came in 1971, when he led Panathinaikos to the Champions Cup final in Wembley. It was the first—and, to date, only—time a Greek team has reached this stage of Europe’s top competition.
Domazos also played for the Greek national team, with 50 appearances and 4 goals. He participated in the first European Championship that Greece qualified for in 1980, once again being there for historic moments.
After retiring from his playing career, Domazos remained active in the sport, and his name has become synonymous with leadership, discipline, and a love of soccer. A true legend who continues to inspires generations of fans and players.
