The lentil lads who were beating and swearing in Nea Smyrni could be said to be an exception. That they are few. That the volcano of fascism they carry inside them has erupted and that's all.
However, it was neither an unusual aberration nor an isolated incident. Several similar cases have preceded it.
Unprovoked beatings, severe insults, arrogant behaviour and bullying by fake magicians, who think they have the freedom to rule people's lives. Like the prison guards in the dry prisons.
And yet. They're right to act like that. They're right to think they're the state. First, because they know that there is no price for their lawless behaviour. Almost all the relevant complaints are eaten up by the darkness.
The notorious EDCs look like the machines used to destroy documents. The best way to make a complaint «disappear» and be forgotten is to bring it under the jurisdiction of the NCA.
Of course, they rarely give an aggravating ruling. Out of collegial solidarity obviously. As for other documented references (Alivizatu's list, for example), not a word. They end up in the dustbin at the hands of Chrysochoidis.
By the way. It was wrong, in fact, that Mr Alivisatos did not denounce when he should have done so the complete disparagement of the Commission set up to investigate police violence. Today, he did expose Mr Chrysochoidis, but he was also exposed himself.
Reason two and more important: The aura of the current power. Proclamations to enforce law and order- yes, legitimate and necessary- send a signal of repressive fury to the long-prepared recipients.
The 2019 elections have released the handbrake that SYRIZA had put on arbitrariness and unleashed the inherent primitivism endemic to police enclaves.
Stop here. Under Syriza there was indeed a problem. Of a different order: symbolic fields of cheap libertarianism (Molotov festivals, blocked streets, provocative occupations, etc.) were treated with obvious embarrassment and blatant obsession.
And while public security was strengthened in most districts with effective policing (reduction of delinquency), the systematic choreographies of frivolity in the centre of Athens were a sign of unchecked impunity and governmental tolerance. The cost was seen in the elections.
But from the point of problematic laxity we found ourselves at the opposite end of the spectrum. Well, this is how the threatening cloud that covers the country's sky today was created.
Thus, some units of the order came to look like insecurity platoons and hordes that terrorize.
If the above reasons are valid, which attempt to identify the origin of police violence (distinct ideological inspiration and impunity), there is also a rule that applies to Mr.Chrysochoidis personally. A rule that has been confirmed now, with Nea Smyrna.
Instead of slamming the aberration in harsh terms, he spoke of «gratuitous violence». A watery expression that deliberately downplays the sad events.
And, of course, not a word about the fabricated news that the police served up to the media about young men who allegedly attacked the police.
In the same vein, the government as a whole. Instead of an unequivocal, robust condemnation from the very first moment, the government spokeswoman mainly resorted to attacks against Tsipras.
And close to the Southwest. non-paper for the communication management of the issue and the obvious aim to hurt SYRIZA and the Left.
Apparently, the governors they don't see what's sickening in the background: a general conflagration in the streets and squares, with the «ordinary people» as the protagonists» not coordinate groups. When they realize it, it will be too late. And they'll pay dearly for it.
Because Nea Smyrni and every square, with families that are starving and young people who are equally suffocating, is neither a playground nor an Exarchia of idiosyncratic disobedience and confrontational opposition...
But there is one thing - the only thing - that somehow doesn't work against the government. It is the exaggerations by some about the junta and Nazi behavior of those in power.
It is about populist diversion and multiply damaging derailment. Because the imperfect reason undermines the necessary, fierce criticism and universal opposition. And anyone who doesn't understand...
