The Minoan summit sanctuary at Agios Georgios in Vouno Kythera. The latest research results (2015)
During the period 2011-2015, the University of the Peloponnese, under the direction of Emilia Banou, conducted intensive surface research and systematic excavation at the site of the Minoan sanctuary of the summit of Agios Georgios in Vouno Kythera. As is known, the sanctuary came to light in the early 1990s following an excavation by the late Yannis Sakellarakis, the results of which were published in a five-volume work recently1. Both the character of the site - it is the only undisputed summit sanctuary outside Crete, founded on a site with repeated use during Roman and Byzantine times as well as during the Venetian occupation - and the uniqueness of the inscriptions, including the number of bronze figurines of worshippers, led to the resumption of the research, with the aim of enriching the archaeological picture and clarifying questions regarding the relationship of the sanctuary to the neighbouring Minoan settlement at Kastri and metropolitan Crete.
