The confrontation between the lawyer Vassilis Spiliotopoulos and the Municipal Authority of Kythera, with Mr. Spiliotopoulos taking the initiative to put an end to «omissions and errors in the provision of basic municipal services». The lawyer and owner of a house in the settlement of Aroniadika announced his intention to file appeals and complaints to the competent authorities, calling on the citizens of the island to co-sign the text of the appeal. Mr. Spiliotopoulos promised to act through legal means, seeking the return of justice and normality in the management of local issues, aiming for transparency and legality. Read the statement he sent us:
NOTICE TO ALL SQUEEGEE OWNERS & HOMEOWNERS ON THE ISLAND OF KYTHERA
Tsirigotes, friends of Kythera with homes on the island, the time for speeches is over.
The time for citizen action has arrived.
In the coming days we will start appeals and complaints to the competent authorities and services of the Greek state on the issue of omissions, omissions and mistakes of the municipality, the mayor, of those responsible for providing the primary and basic services that a favored state must provide to its citizens.
As a first step, we will appeal to the “Ombudsman”, while at the same time we will inform the parties in Parliament.
Those of you who have suffered and/or continue to suffer the hardships of water shortages, the malfunctioning of a flimsy sewage system, those of you who have been stuck in an unbearable situation in the summer with risks to your own HEALTH, you can co-sign the text of the appeal. Later this week we will let you know how.
It is important for you to know that there will be no financial burden for anyone to apply to the Ombudsman.
I must now clarify the following very important points:
- These movements have no oppositional mood, they are not confused with any political formation.
- There is no intention of political ambition, as I neither vote nor am I going to deal with the self-governing of the municipality of Kythera or run for any office on the island.
All this comes from the righteous indignation and anger of citizens against an inefficient municipal authority, which while for about ten years exercising power, as it has spent millions of euros on projects (sic) of dubious or even zero substance, left the water supply and sewerage networks at the mercy of time, making fragmentary and ineffective interventions, for which Mr. Harhalakis demands that we recognize and glorify him as a model of self-governing factor. NO!!!
The obligation of the municipality and the mayor, Mr. Harhalakis, is to do everything, but everything possible to provide the primary and basic services to the citizens to whom he is essentially accountable.
The “I did everything I could” - “the reservoirs are too much” etc. etc. are silly and unfounded excuses to cover up your longstanding failure to perform your duties.
All the more so that at the time of the crisis the responsible mayor preferred to go on holiday to Antikythera... When he returned instead of helping and listening to the voice of the citizens' anguish, in his usual phobic and irresponsible tactics he preferred to ignore, mock and intimidate those citizens who demanded the obvious - a decent, safe stay on the island of Kythera.
Friends of Tsiriyot I have received countless messages of support and solidarity and I thank you.
I can only promise you one thing:
We're going to crush them into legality.
Because in a favoured society, what is paramount is the law, the harmonious coexistence, the tolerance required by the social contract, everything that the municipal authority and the mayor personally have violated.
Finally, irrespective of the above, I would like to sincerely ask a favor from the citizens of Kythera:
In the next election, don't vote for corks. They float but they don't swim...
