Festive events were held again this year in Kythira and all the Ionian Islands, marking the 158th anniversary of the union of the Ionian Islands with mainland Greece.
The Kythira Association of Athens took part in the official anniversary celebrations at the Holy Metropolis of Athens, from which we are publishing a wealth of photographic material today.
The history of the Union of the Ionian Islands
May 21, 1864, is a landmark day for the inhabitants of the Ionian Islands. A few months earlier, in March 1864, a treaty was signed between the three powers, England, France, and Russia, and the Kingdom of Greece, and thus the Ionian Islands came under Greek sovereignty.
It was the first expansion of the Greek state's borders, approximately thirty years after its declaration of independence.
