The importance of citizens rushing to get vaccinated with the third dose, because it protects them, has been stressed by the Minister of Health, Thanos Plevris.
«All the evidence shows that our vaccinated citizens who are most at risk are those who have completed their vaccination and have been vaccinated for six months. So, it is of great importance that those of us who have completed the 6 months should apply for the third instalment», he added.
In his remarks, the minister reiterated the risks faced by the unvaccinated, saying: «The evidence is relentless and the numbers are relentless. Over 85% and towards 90% of our fellow citizens in ICU beds are unvaccinated, and overall across all indicators of heavy hospitalisation, our unvaccinated fellow citizens are much more at risk.».
The chairman of the national vaccination committee, Maria Theodoridou, talking about the results of the third tranche with mRNA vaccines, stressed that it helps prevent severe forms of covid.
As he said, people who received a third dose were compared with people who had received two doses of the vaccine on three specific factors: hospital admission, serious illness and death, and the effectiveness of the third dose seven days after it was given. «It was found that the third dose reduced by 93% the probability of hospital admission, by 92% the probability of serious illness and hospitalisation and by 81% the probability of death.».
Across the country, more than 35,000 active cases while a new black record was set in the last 24 hours. 6,808 new infections have been recorded, 441 patients are intubated and 42 people have died.
One in 3 unvaccinated older people over 70 years will need hospitalisation and the rate rises to 50% if they have at least one underlying disease. The only weapon is vaccination.
In the last three days over 60,000 new appointments for the first instalment have been made. The flow for the booster dose is stable with about 30,000 appointments per day.
The Vice Rector of the University of Athens and Professor of Microbiology, Athanasios Tsakris, he points out: «Those who have had the third dose are 5-10 times less likely to get sick than those who have had the two doses and 20-25 times less likely than the unvaccinated.».
