A total of 403 mutant coronavirus strains have been detected in our country
A total of 403 mutant coronavirus strains have been identified in Greece, of which 6 are the South African mutation and all the rest the British one, according to the National Genomic Surveillance Network for SARS-CoV-2 mutations.
The newest data are obtained after the genomic analysis of 382 samples from the period 29 December-2 February 2021 from the Region of Attica and the Regional Units of Thessaloniki, Kozani, Lasithi, Heraklion, Ioannina, Alexandroupolis, Serres, Kilkis and Mytilene.
Of the 382 samples analysed, all met the strict quality criteria required for the analysis and the final check was successfully completed. The screening identified a total of 168 strains with variants of concern. Of these, 166 samples were positive for the novel strain VOC 202012/01 (Lineage B.1.1.7/UK) and 2 samples were positive for the novel strain 20H/501Y.V2 (Lineage B.1.351/South Africa).
Specifically, VOC strain 202012/01 (Lineage B.1.1.7/UK lineage) was detected in:
-114 samples from the Region of Attica (92 from the community and 22 from hospitals)
-10 samples from the P.E. of Thessaloniki (4 from the community and 6 from hospitals)
-16 samples from the P.E. Kozani (all hospital samples)
-16 samples from the Lassithi Region (8 from the community and 8 from hospitals)
-9 samples from the P.E. Heraklion (5 from the community and 4 from hospitals)
-1 sample from the Ioannina region (hospital)
Regarding the strain 20H/501Y.V2 (Lineage B.1.351/South Africa) was detected in 2 samples from Ioannina (hospital samples).
A total of 397 positive samples for the mutant strain B.1.1.7/UK lineage and 6 samples for the mutant strain Lineage B.1.351/South Africa of SARS-CoV-2 have been identified in our country.
