Closed tomorrow all schools in Attica by decision of Nikos Chardalias
Strong phenomena since Wednesday noon - Classes continue with distance learning, limited travel to protect students and teachers
By decision of the Regional Governor Nikos Chardalias and on the recommendation of the members of the Risk Assessment Committee, Civil Protection and EMF, all public and private schools of Primary and Secondary Education, as well as night schools throughout Attica will be closed for precautionary reasons tomorrow, Wednesday, January 21.
This decision was taken in order to protect students and staff from the risks that could arise from travelling to and from schools, as heavy rainfall with high density is forecast from midday onwards.
In his statements, the Regional Governor Nikos Chardalias pointed out the following:
«A short while ago, our Attica was put on red alert. Therefore, taking into account the meteorological models and the recommendations of the Risk Assessment Committee, we have decided to close schools in Attica for tomorrow, Wednesday.
The phenomena are expected to be particularly intense from 12 noon onwards, with strong storms, strong winds and a larger volume of water than last time. What concerns us is not so much the amount of rain, but the rapidity of the rain - a lot of water in a short time.
Lessons are not lost. We use tele-education and reduce travel, especially during the critical times of the phenomena, as the Region of Attica alone makes 1,910 daily journeys for more than 32,000 students.
We respect family planning, but we know the strengths and weaknesses of old infrastructures and we choose to be proactive.
Because the responsibility towards our children is clear and not risky. And when it comes to their safety, we have to be one step ahead.».
It is noted that by order of the Regional Governor, all the Civil Protection mechanism of the Region is from early Tuesday morning in high alert, in order to assist, if requested, the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection which has overall responsibility for planning to deal with bad weather. Already, the Regional Civil Protection Coordination Bodies (RCCBs) are meeting in all the Regional Units of the Basin in order to better prepare on issues related to preparedness and risk management of flooding events.
