Kythera Citizens' Movement: the Board for the Development of Offshore Wind Farms

PRESS RELEASE-CITIZENS' MOVEMENT OF KYTHERA

On 31-10-2023, the Hellenic Hydrocarbon and Energy Resources Management Company (Hellenic Hydrocarbon and Energy Resources Management Company) announced at an event held in Athens, the draft National Offshore Wind Farm Development Programme. The fact that the same company responsible for managing investments for hydrocarbon extraction is also responsible for the development of offshore wind farms is at the very least an oxymoron and raises legitimate questions.

This programme proposes 23 Areas for the Organised Development of Offshore Wind Farms (ODAWF) with a medium to long-term horizon for the implementation of projects. These areas include the SEA area to the west of the Antikythera and in substantial contact with the NATURA area GR0000008 - EEZ Antikythera, PRASONISI and LAGKOVARDOS whose importance in terms of migratory bird of prey fauna, seabirds and marine mammals has been highlighted in the Special Environmental Assessment (SEA) which has very recently been put out to public consultation.

Comments can be submitted to the public consultation on the Strategic Environmental Impact Assessment which runs until 30-11-11 at sec.dipa@prv.ypeka.gr The study is available for download here: https://herema.gr/announcement-seia-ndp-owf/
