The situation in the country appears to be out of control, despite assurances from officials, regarding the issue of pandemic. Patients lose the battle with the disease without even having the chance to fight it, due to a lack of sufficient numbers in Intensive Care Units for coronavirus.
The latest complaint to come to light concerns the death of a 74-year-old patient, fully vaccinated, who was being treated at the hospital in Nice. The patient was admitted to the hospital on November 2, intubated, was not admitted to the ICU due to lack of beds and finally settled on the 8th of the month.
«On Tuesday, November 2, father mine, Christos Ioannou, He was taken to Nice Hospital with coronavirus. Over the next few days, his condition worsened and on Friday, November 6, he was intubated but not admitted to the ICU because, as the hospital informed us, there were no beds available. I asked the hospital if a request had been made to find another ICU bed, and they replied affirmatively, telling me that they would inform me as soon as a bed became available. However, one was never found,» Konstantinos Ioannou, a special education teacher at the Melissochori elementary school in Thessaloniki, told Reporters United.
According to the relevant publication, while his father was intubated and waiting for a bed, Mr. Ioannou attempted to highlight the broader issue of the lack of ICU beds., publishing a letter on November 8 in which he complained that despite the hospital's request, no bed was available and the days were passing.
«The fact that my father has been intubated outside the ICU for three days shows that there are no longer any Covid ICU beds in public hospitals in Attica (and not only in Northern Greece, as reported in the public sphere),» he noted in his letter. However, a few hours later, on the evening of November 8, the 74-year-old patient passed away.
«I wanted my father to have access to equal opportunities.»
«During my father's hospitalization, the doctors were very helpful, they did superhuman efforts and kept me constantly informed. The problems concern the state, which must inform citizens about how many patients are currently outside the ICU and waiting on the list.. Transparency is required. Families have the right to know what is happening to their loved ones in hospitals,» Mr. Ioannou commented to Reporters United.
He added: «Private hospitals must help out if public hospitals do not have beds available. While my father was in the hospital, I called two private hospitals to see if he could be transferred there, even though I didn't know if I could afford the cost of treatment. The hospitals replied that they do not accept patients with Covid. So, the alternative is for people to die outside the ICU? In my opinion, that is not an alternative. All people should have the opportunity to fight for their lives.. That's what I wanted for my father. He had heart problems and was a difficult case, but I wanted him to have access to equal opportunities. The state deprived her of it.. Let's demand it for future patients.
Silence from Thanos Plevris
According to the relevant publication, there was communication with the Ministry of Health, requesting official information both on the case of the deceased patient at the General Hospital of Nikaia and on the number of intubated patients who are currently outside the ICU. At the same time, the Ministry of Health was asked why ICU beds in private clinics had not already been requisitioned. However, the Ministry of Health preferred to remain silent, as did not respond to questions.
