Starting today, the weather is changing rapidly with EMY issued an emergency bulletin yesterday warning of worsening conditions, while meteorologists recommend extreme caution. caution to citizens, as increased rainfall is expected in many areas over the next few days.

The wave of bad weather coming from northern Italy and moving southeast It will initially hit the northwest on Friday evening and the rest of the country on Saturday. In detail, and according to meteorologist Klearchos Marousakis, the bad weather will move in three phases:

From Friday evening to Saturday afternoon, it will hit West and specifically Eptanisa, Epirus, Western Solid and the Western Peloponnese.

From Saturday afternoon until Sunday evening, it will affect most of the country, particularly Attica, Thessaly, central Macedonia, and Peloponnese. «The heavy rainfall will occur between noon and Sunday afternoon,» said the meteorologist, advising caution because the Panathinaikos-Olympiacos derby will be taking place at that time.

What Kostas Lagouvardos told ethnos about the development of the bad weather

Heavy rainfall across the country and winds reaching up to 7-8 Beaufort will be the cause of the bad weather «Eva» will begin to affect Greece from midday on Saturday and will certainly last until Sunday.

This was reported to ethnos.gr by meteorologist and research director at the National Observatory of Athens, who described «Eva» as an expected phenomenon for the autumn season, but called on citizens to be cautious.

«This is typical autumn weather. It is not unusual for this time of year and certainly not strange. Citizens must be careful, because autumn storms always bring intense weather phenomena. As the phenomenon is coming to an end in our country, in the next 24 hours we will be able to make more accurate predictions and assess the risk depending on the area,» Mr. Lagouvardos told ethnos.gr.

From noon on Saturday

According to him, «Eva» is currently located in Italy and is moving eastward. From Saturday afternoon, it will begin to bring heavy rainfall to the Ionian Islands and the mainland areas of Western Greece.

From Saturday evening, heavy rainfall will also affect the rest of the country, including the major urban centers of Athens and Thessaloniki. On Sunday, the phenomenon will spread to the Aegean, where heavy rainfall will be recorded in Crete, the Cyclades, and the Dodecanese, while the rains will continue in many other parts of the country, such as Attica.

«We will have southerly winds, which will reach up to 7-8 Beaufort. The temperature will also drop, and on Sunday in particular, we will see a drop of up to 8 degrees compared to today, when we have really high temperatures for this time of year, with 28 degrees Celsius recorded in Attica,» emphasizes the meteorologist and director of research at the National Observatory of Athens.

Civil Protection advises extreme caution – How to protect yourself from severe weather conditions

Recommendations to citizens to be particularly cautious, taking measures to protect themselves from the dangers posed by severe weather conditions, in view of the bad weather named «EVA,» which will cause a deterioration in weather conditions across almost the entire country.

In particular, in areas where heavy rainfall, storms, or strong winds are forecast, the GSCP recommends that citizens:

  • Secure objects that could cause damage or injury if swept away by severe weather conditions.
  • Ensure that the gutters and downspouts of residences are not blocked and are functioning properly.
  • Avoid crossing streams and creeks, on foot or by vehicle, during storms and rainfall, as well as for several hours after they have ended.
  • Avoid outdoor work and activities in marine and coastal areas during severe weather events (risk of lightning strikes).
  • Take immediate shelter during a hailstorm. Take refuge in a building or car and do not leave the safe area until you are sure that the storm has passed. Hailstorms can also be very dangerous for animals.
  • Avoid walking under large trees, hanging signs, and generally areas where light objects (e.g., flower pots, broken glass, etc.) may become detached and fall to the ground (e.g., under balconies).
  • Follow the instructions of the local authorities, such as the traffic police, etc., to the letter.

Also, in areas with intense lightning activity:

If you are at home:

  • Do not hold electrical appliances or the telephone, as lightning can pass through the cables.
  • Disconnect TV sets from the antenna and power supply.
  • Avoid touching plumbing pipes (kitchen, bathroom) as they are good conductors of electricity.

If you are in the car:

  • Park it at the side of the road and away from trees that could fall on it.
  • Stay inside and turn on your hazard lights (emergency lights) until the storm passes.
  •  Close the windows and do not lean on metal objects.
  • Avoid flooded roads.
  • If you are outdoors:
  • Take refuge in a building or car, otherwise sit immediately on the ground without lying down.
  • Take shelter under solid branches of low trees if you are in a forest.
  • Never take shelter under a tall tree in an open area.
  • Avoid low-lying areas due to the risk of flooding.
  • Do not stand next to utility poles, power lines, telephone lines, or fences.
  • Do not approach metal objects (e.g., cars, bicycles, camping equipment, etc.).
  • Stay away from rivers, lakes, or other bodies of water.
  • If you are in the sea, get out immediately.
  • If you find yourself isolated on flat ground and feel your hair standing on end (which indicates that lightning is about to strike), sit down with your head between your legs (to minimize your body surface area and contact with the ground) and throw away any metal objects you have on you.
