The reasons why the restoration of the roads at the points where water supply works are carried out have not been completed, the contractor of the project lists in an official letter to the Municipality of Kythera.
As specified, the outstanding issues are located in the Petrouni - Potamos (North Section) and Kontolianika - Kafina - Agios Ilias (South Section) sections. The company attributes the delay in the paving work to two main factors: the ongoing adverse weather conditions (continuous rainfall and low temperatures) and the maintenance work carried out in March at the local asphalt mixing plant. At the same time, it is pointed out that it is practically impossible to transport ready-mixed material from Laconia.
The contractor apologizes for the nuisance, draws the attention of drivers and commits to reinforcing the signage and maintaining the gravel stools until conditions allow for final asphalt paving.
The company's letter is reproduced below:
Information regarding the laying of asphalt - road rehabilitation in the context of the project «REPAIR AND RESTORATION OF WATER NETWORKS - WATER SUPPLY SYSTEMS - DAM CONNECTION»
Within the framework of the project we are carrying out, the restoration with asphalt of the roads where new water supply networks have been constructed is pending, namely in the sections Petrouni - Potamos (North Section) and Kontolianika-Kafina-Agios Ilias (South Section).
The reasons why these restoration works have not been completed are twofold:
Firstly, the existing weather conditions (continuous rainfall) do not allow the preparation work (which precedes the laying of the pavement) and the subsequent laying of the asphalt on the pits to be carried out. The asphalt restoration work requires continuous periods of good conditions (absence of rainfall and normal temperatures >5°C) which do not exist at present. Periods of two to three days without rainfall are not sufficient to carry out the above work, and the possible start of preparation work without finally being able to spread asphalt due to weather conditions poses greater risks to passers-by.
Secondly, the maintenance work on the local bitumen mix preparation plant, which took place in March, did not allow the production of material on the days when there were good weather conditions. It is pointed out that it is not possible to transport ready-made asphalt mastic from Laconia, as neither the existing weather conditions (low temperatures resulting in freezing of the material) nor the existing ferry routes allow this.
We draw the attention of passing drivers to the above sections concerning the work we are carrying out for the coming period. Please be advised that we will ensure that existing signage is increased, roads are cleaned and gravel is repaved whenever necessary (especially after rainfall) , we are committed to carrying out restoration work immediately once the weather conditions normalise and asphalt mix production from the local manufacturing plant commences and we apologise for any inconvenience caused.
