On Thursday, October 5, 2023, the survivors and relatives of the dead and missing returned to Diakofti of Kythera for a moving ceremony on the beach, next to the rocks where exactly one year ago, in October 2022, a boat with about 100 passengers fell, pushed by the wild waves.
These people trying to reach Europe, crossing its militarized borders, ended up either drowning or surviving thanks to the people of Kythera who rescued them.
They had left their homes in search of a life of security, without war and persecution, a life of rights and dignity.
The survivors and families of the dead and missing returned to the scene of the shipwreck to thank the people who, risking their own safety, joined forces and finally managed to save 80 people from death.
They did what for them was the obvious thing to do.
