Priest Panagiotis Megalokonomos for the road to Kalamavros: «What is it?»

«It is a shame for our island that the works present this picture (see photos) on the busiest road to the beach of the island and while the tourist season has begun».

We publish the intervention of our compatriot Priest Panagiotis Megalokonomou for the road in Kalamavros to Melidoni. The relevant photos are also listed at the end.

Read here:

Is it their fault?;

Since last autumn, the widening and asphalting of the road to Melidoni beach, the most famous and highly frequented beach of Kythera, started. A really necessary project because, although the road surface was in good condition, the widening was needed considering that during the summer months the number of bathers on this beach can reach 1000 people per day with all that this implies.

Unfortunately, and while we are well into the tourist season, the project is at an early stage and this part of the road is in a miserable state after the intervention of heavy vehicles.

As I was informed, the contractor stopped the project because he was unpaid and can no longer afford the cost of the work. And it is, of course, perfectly respectable.

According to the contractor ( interviewed in mid-June ) the project is funded by the District and although bills have been sent out money has not shown up.

The District contends that since no sign has been posted indicating the project entity, it does not own the project.

And of course the project cannot be finished now and the beach closed. But improvements can be made, without closing the road, so that people do not disable their cars and so that their physical integrity is not endangered ( incidents have already begun ).

But I ask you as an ordinary Greek taxpaying citizen:

  1. Is it possible to start such a project without a credit? ;
  2. If the credit exists, is it possible that because of bureaucracy or the negligence of some people, funding is not going ahead and payments are not being made as work progresses?;

At last when will the works be done as they should be and in the time it takes to say that the state is paying back to its citizens the high taxes it imposes on them? ;

It is a shame for our island to present this picture (see photos) on the busiest road to the beach of the island and while the tourist season has begun.

Who is to blame or who is neglecting and why are they writing us on the back of their shoes?;

P.S. This is also the responsibility of Enchorios, which collects about 35,000 € per year from businesses in Melidoni and has not contributed anything to the road network of the area. As for the non-existent toilets, when there is an inability to overcome difficulties it is very easy to blame sworn employees or uncooperative services.

With respect,

priest Panagiotis Megalokonomos
