Written Divine Sermon, Sunday 2nd Luke (02/10/22)
In your spiritual life there are many sports. And the greatest of all is indicated by Christ in His words which we hear in this Sunday's Gospel reading.
It begins with a general rule and then proceeds to the peaks:
«As you want people to treat you, so should you treat them.’.
And of course you must do this to everyone. For if you love only those who love you, what favor, grace, reward is yours from God? None. Since sinners do the same. And if you lend only to those from whom you hope to get back what you have given them, what grace and reward from God is yours? None. And the wicked and sinners lend to others of their own kind, that they too may have the same benefits and rewards from them.
«You have loved our enemies too much»! But not you. You love your enemies and benefit and lend them without expecting anything in return. Then your wages, your reward from God will be very great. You will be proclaimed children of God by grace, that is, gods by grace, and you too, since you will be spiritually like Him.
For even He does not cease to be good and beneficial to evil men, who show ingratitude and mock His many benefits.
Become therefore «compassionate», merciful to your fellow men and compassionate to their sufferings and needs, just as your heavenly Father is merciful to all.
