An operation to evacuate some of the staff of the Consulate General in Mariupol, as well as Greek citizens, is scheduled to take place tomorrow, Wednesday (March 2) at 11:00 a.m., according to diplomatic sources.
Given the security situation in Ukraine, and specifically in the Mariupol area, and given that, according to Russian announcements, a humanitarian corridor will open on Wednesday, March 2, to allow civilians to leave Mariupol and travel westward toward Moldova, it was decided to evacuate part of the staff of the Consulate General, all journalists housed on the Consulate General’s premises, as well as Greek citizens who wish to leave.
The motorcade led by Ambassador Francisco Costellano is expected to depart by road from Mariupol tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. It should be noted that the trip will be made using their own vehicles.
Greek citizens who had expressed an interest in leaving Mariupol are being informed by the Consulate General and the Crisis Management Unit of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The plan is for the procession to move toward the city of Zaporizhzhia and then, depending on the conditions at the border with Moldova, where a delegation from the Embassy in Bucharest, led by Ambassador Sofia Grammata, will be on hand to provide them with all possible assistance.
Manolis Androulakis, the Consul General in Mariupol, will remain at the Consulate General, which will continue to operate.
