The issue of the placement of teachers in the schools of Kythera is not new. Every September it becomes more and more intense. To give you an idea of the magnitude: last year the high school started the school year with just three teachers for 90 students.
The substitutes who come to the island are trying to get back on their feet, but they are facing difficulties that are not their own. Their salary is not easily enough to cover the cost of living, which we all know well how expensive it is. And if the rents in Kythera have not yet reached the outrageous prices of other islands, this does not mean that living is easy. Moreover, there is also the phenomenon here of people being asked to leave the house as soon as June arrives, in order to free up the property for tourist use.
And all this for people who are uprooted every year and go from island to island, unable to plan their lives, their families, their future. Nevertheless, the State and parents have the requirement to be efficient and dedicated to our children.
It is obvious that this vicious circle must be broken. The only thing that can provide a real solution is permanent appointments and full coverage of all vacancies. Because our children have the right to start the school year with teachers in their classrooms - and not with promises that every year remain empty.
