Ο risk of new pandemics increases, according to scientific data. There is urgent need for strong, Completed, sustainable and durable systems surveillance. The global community made mistakes in dealing with of coronavirus, which we are now in a better position to deal with.
The above was reported by Professor Sotiris Tsiodras during his speech on «Pandemic & Scientific Challenges», at the 18th Annual Panhellenic Conference of the Hellenic Network of Healthy Cities of the World Health Organization (HNCHO).
The conference takes place on 6-8 October and is co-organised by the Region of Attica. The proceedings were opened by the Governor of Attica and President of the Attica Region and President of the Hellenic Federation of Public Health and Welfare, George Patoulis, who, inviting Mr. Tsiodras to the podium, said: «Greece has nothing to envy from scientists from outside Greece, we have the best and one of them is Sotiris Tsiodras».
Humanity's mistakes in dealing with Covid
Mr. Tsiodras said that humanity has made huge mistakes in the treatment of Covid-19. «Unfortunately societies were slow to react, most governments were slow to react and the world slowly lost confidence in science. This is a big risk. There was and huge global failure. Hopefully we will learn,» the professor said.
On Covid-19 he said that there is a slight increase, however, today we are at a different level to deal with it. He presented scientific data on new surveillance systems, the benefits of vaccination and new treatments.
«It is visible the way in which we will learn to live with the pandemic, protecting the vulnerable, using treatments widely and giving the booster dose to the population, investing in new forms of surveillance, continuing the old ones and of course reviewing, seeing what we did wrong. Investing to improve the shortcomings, admitting them and moving forward.».
Covid-19 is not... a fox
Responding to those who had argued that Covid-19 is a simple fowl, Mr. Tsiodras said that, according to scientific data, it has 30 to 56 times more excess mortality from the flu H1N1 of 2009. He noted that the Age remains the key factor for death by Covid-19. It is over 1,000 times the risk of death in a person over 80 years old than an 18-year-old, he added.
The Covid-19 pandemic is going towards a slight increase, but the more we use the measures, the fewer deaths we will have, he said. «We are investing in a strategy to control people at increased risk, we are investing in avoiding hospitalisations and ICUs.
«At the same time, we are investing in new tools for gene analysis of the virus. 99% currently in Greece is a B4,B5 virus. Will it evolve? There are at least four different mutations right now in different parts of the world that are gaining momentum. Will they make a new wave, will it be the same, will it be better, do we have the weapons?» Ciodra's answer was yes, but we need to keep monitoring.
Vaccines and booster dose
«Where is the epidemic of vaccine deaths after 12.7 billion doses of vaccines?», the professor asked, responding to those who claim that vaccines lead to more deaths. «They are. wrong logic and it is proven every day», he stressed.
«20 million deaths prevented by the end of 2021 by the vaccine,» he said. On the 4th installment said that according to data it has great benefit especially those over 60 years old. Data from many, many scientific studies show that natural immunity and vaccination protect us.
In Greece recorded 24% re-infections in the last week. Infections in Europe in April reached 80% and in Greece over 90% of the population in the prefectures of Thessaly have had a single infection.
Η protection decreasing gradually after 4 months the probability of protection from initial infection is around 30% to 40%. If in the summer one passed Omicron the protection is 75% which gradually decreases, the professor said. He added that the antibodies are more if one has passed infection and is triple vaccinated. In everyone at 4 months the protection decreases.
According to an analysis by US researchers, Mr.Tsiodras said, the 4th dose of the vaccine will save about 90,000 lives and there will be an economic benefit from hospitalizations.
Unfortunately, only 15% of people over 60 years of age in Europe and Greece have been vaccinated with a 4th dose. «We are far behind and we have adopted an anti-vaccine stance that will harm us and will do harm to Europe and the whole Western world», Mr. Vaccines protect us from serious disease and death, not so much from infection, and we need more vaccines.
«Science is evolving and we're hoping for a vaccine that will last us for a year».
Doctor refused to give the new treatment
Over 40,000 regimens of the new treatments have been given in Greece to patients with Covid-19. «Yet yesterday great name in medicine in a large metropolitan area gave bad advice, saying he does not use the treatment. The patient was 83 years old,» Mr Tsiodras said.
The data, however, exist on the benefits of the drug and «natural I said to prescribe the medicine and of course to receive it as soon as possible becomes the patient,» he stressed.
