Ο Kythiraikos Association of Athens in cooperation with the Society of Kytheraic Studies, honored in a special event, the 200th anniversary of the Revolution of 1821, which led to the independence of Greece.
The event entitled «Kythera in the struggle of the national rebirth», held on Sunday 7 November at the hotel Titania, under the auspices of the Commission «Greece 2021».
With this event, Kythera was worthily represented in the celebrations taking place this year, both in Greece and abroad, in order to highlight the struggles of the Greek people for their liberation and the preservation of collective historical memory. Emphasis was placed, apart from the history of revolutionary Greece, on the particular history of Kythera during the pre-revolutionary and revolutionary period.
The audience was welcomed by the President of the Kytheraic Association of Athens, Mrs. Vasiliki Samiou and the President of the Society of Kytheraic Studies, Mrs. Kati Aroni-Cichli. Also, the President of the «Greece 2021» Committee, Mrs. Yianna Angelopoulou-Daskalaki, gave a speech to the event.
A brief welcome address was given by Vice-Regional Governor Mrs. Vasiliki Theodorakopoulou-Bogri and Member of Parliament for Piraeus and Islands Mr. Nikolaos Manolakos.

Kaiti Aroni-Tsichli, Professor Emeritus of History at Panteion University: «The echoes of the Revolution of ’21 in Kythera».
Eleni Harou-Koronaiou, Philologist «Eminent refugees in Kythera during the Greek Revolution»
Kostis Gotsinas, Doctor of History, French School of Athens «Kythera during the revolutionary years through French sources».
The speakers, in their presentations, presented personalities who stood out for their practical contribution to the struggle and important information about Kythera in the pre-revolutionary and revolutionary period.
This was followed by an audiovisual narrative, with texts and images edited by Mrs. Katie Aroni-Tsichli, which «brought to life» the Greek revolution and revived aspects of Kythera at that time.
The event was accompanied musically by the Commercial Bank Choir, under the direction of Maestro Stavros Beris, with piano accompaniment by Mrs. Katerina Karabacha. The choir performed songs by Greek and foreign composers from the pre-revolutionary and revolutionary period. A special moment, which completed the event, was the Hymn to freedom, in an original setting by Nikolaos Mantzaros.
The presentation and coordination of the event was successfully curated by Mrs. Alexandra Lourantou.
The event was honored with the presence of representatives of Kythera clubs, Kythirians and friends of Kythira who responded to our invitation.
