The leader of the main opposition party in the Municipality of Kythira, Zacharias Souris, visited the Consulate General of Greece in New York, where he met with Consul General Iphigenia Kanara and representatives of the Greek community. The focus was on presenting the progress made on the establishment of the Museum of Migration in Kythira and strengthening cooperation with organized communities of the Diaspora. Zacharias Souris at the Consulate General of Greece in New York: Promoting the Immigration Museum and strengthening ties with the Greek community
An important institutional meeting was held by the leader of the main opposition party of the Municipality of Kythira and Antikythira and leader of the municipal faction «All Together, Kythira – Antikythira,» Mr. Zacharias Souris, at the Consulate General of Greece in New York, as part of his official visit to the United States. Mr. Souris was received by Consul General Ms. Iphigenia Kanara.
Mr. Souris was accompanied by the President of Kytherians Association of New York, Mr. Robert Kenny, with whom he held a series of meetings with representatives of the Greek diaspora, with the aim of strengthening ties of cooperation and maintaining the close relationship between Kythira and the organized communities of the Diaspora.
During the meeting, the vision and progress surrounding the major undertaking to establish the Museum of Migration, a project undertaken by the Association of Friends of the Museums of Kythira in collaboration with the Municipality of Kythira. An official letter from the Association was delivered, informing the Consulate General of the historical and cultural significance of the project, as well as an open invitation to Greeks of the Diaspora to contribute personal and family testimonies to the Museum's collective documentation.
The Museum of Migration, which is being prepared in Kythira, aims to become a modern hub of memory, cultural connection, and historical record of Greek migration, referring not only to the people of Kythira but also to the broader phenomenon of the Greek diaspora. The study of the project has been entrusted to the Academy of Athens, ensuring scientific validity and a high level of implementation.
During the meeting, the Consul General was thoroughly briefed on the progress of the Museum project and issues of cooperation with the local government, the promotion of the project among the Greek diaspora, and the utilization of diaspora dynamics in highlighting Greek and Kythirian history were discussed.
Mr. Souris expressed his particular satisfaction with the warm interest and support shown by the Consul General, emphasizing that this visit is an important step in strengthening the international presence of Kythira and promoting a project of national and cultural significance.
The trip to New York is part of the broader plan for international networking and cooperation of the «All Together, Kythira – Antikythira» faction, with the aim of culturally strengthening the island and actively involving the Greek diaspora in projects of high added value.
