There were 94,806 deaths in Greece in the first 35 weeks of this year (January 4, 2021-September 5, 2021) (48,149 men and 46,657 women), while in the corresponding 35 weeks of 2020 (December 30, 2019-August 30, 2020) they had risen to 86,121 (43,038 men and 43,083 women)., marking an increase of 10.08%.
At the same time, there was an increase of 10,925 deaths (13,02%) compared to the average for the first 35 weeks of the six-year period 2015-2020 (83,881 deaths).
The corresponding rates per year for the period 2015-2020 are -0.23% in 2020 compared to 2019 (86,322), 6.66% in 2019 compared to 2018 (80,930), -6.33% in 2018 compared to 2017 (86,398), 8.35% in 2017 compared to 2016 (79,738) and -4.82% in 2016 compared to 2015 (83,779).
Based on ELSTAT, This year, most deaths were recorded in week 26 (June 28-July 4, 2021), week 31 (August 2-8, 2021), the 18th (May 3-9, 2021), and the 17th week (April 26-May 2, 2021), with increase rates of 44.6%, 43%, 27.3% and 27.2%, respectively, compared to last year. The fewest deaths were recorded in the 5th (1/2-7/2/2021), 2nd (11/1-17/1/2021) and 6th weeks (8/2-14/2/2021) with decrease rates of 16.6%, 14.9% and 13.6%, respectively.
