The permanent population of Greece is 10.432.481, according to the provisional results of the 2021 census conducted by the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT).
Men are 5,075,249 and women are 5,357,232. The population is down by 3.5% from the previous census in 2011.
The ELSTAT data indicate that by at the 2011 census, the permanent population stood at 10,816,286.

The head of the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT), Athanasios Thanopoulos, stressed that «the census is a milestone as it is the first digital census«.
Women amount to 5,357,232 - making up 51.3% of the population, while men are 5,075,249.
The population in the 13 Regions
The first region in terms of population is Attica with a population of 3.792.469.
This is a decrease of 35,965 inhabitants. Followed by the Region of Central Macedonia 1.792.069 inhabitants, which corresponds to a decrease of 90.039 inhabitants.
Out of the 13 regions of the country, 12 had a decrease except for the South Aegean, where the population increased from 309,000 to 324,000 inhabitants.
The... deniers of the census
It is recalled that the 2021 census started with a new «movement» of naysayers.
There have always been those who were more cautious about the census process, but this year the reactions have multiplied. There are many who comment that it is a fashion after the coronavirus, mask and vaccine deniers.
The «census refusers» found unlikely reasons to avoid the procedure, but what is even stranger is that they did not explain the reason for the refusal!
