The procedures for claiming the shocking photos, which show the 200 communists in Kaisariani the moment they are led to the firing squad by the Nazis, the Greek state has started.
In particular, the government spokesman, Pavlos Marinakis, said that according to information from the Ministry of Culture, the photographs of Greek resistance fighters, which are the subject of an ongoing auction, must be acquired by the Greek state, if they are genuine, as unique evidence of history and culture.
“The Ministry of Culture has initiated the claim procedures. Provided that their authenticity is proven and that they will be checked by experts appointed by the Ministry of Culture.”, added Mr.Marinakis.
It is recalled that the left and centre-left opposition parties have already called for the institutional intervention of the Greek state in order to protect this historical evidence of the National Resistance.
Kaklamanis: There is an international law prohibiting the auction of war documents
In a letter to the Speaker of the Parliament, Nikitas Kaklamanis, the KKE's leader Dimitris Koutsoumbas called on the Greek Parliament «to take all necessary legal and other actions in order to stop the auction of these photos» which, as he points out «should be returned to the Museum of National Resistance of the Municipality of Kaisariani, the Municipality of Haidari and the KKE».
Mr.Kaklamanis for his part stated that the House will try to reclaim the photos, although he pointed out that it is the responsibility of the Ministry of Culture. He also noted that there is an international law that prohibits this platform (e bay) from trading war evidence.
The former Prime Minister, Alexis Tsipras, had sent a letter to the President of the Parliament yesterday, asking the Parliament Foundation to buy the photos «as a tribute to the resistance and its dead, but also as a testimony to the heroism with which the Greek people faced the horrors of the Nazi occupation».
The intervention of the Ministry of Culture in order to first establish the authenticity of the photographs of the 200 executed communists in Kaesariani and if this is confirmed to proceed to their purchase, meanwhile asked PASOK.
“History is not up for auction” said PASOK spokesman Costas Tsoukalas.
«These documents are not a commodity. They are our history. The Greek State must acquire them and highlight them as an integral part of history and education.» stressed in a post the president of SYRIZA-P.S., Socrates Famellos. SYRIZA submitted a question to the Ministers of Education and Culture.
The head of the New Left party, Alexis Charitsis, contacted Mendoni yesterday, asking for the claim of the photos. He stressed in a post that the Ministry of Culture must make every effort to bring these photos to Greece.
