The Mayor of Kythera Efstratios Harhalakis made an anniversary post on Facebook. Read what he wrote.
«It was 26-05-2014, exactly 10 years ago, when the citizens of Kythera and Antikythera honoured us with their vote and promoted us to the administration of our Municipality.
I and my colleagues worked methodically and with a programme, we did not let any funding go to waste, we clashed where we had to with petty interests and entrenched micro-political perceptions that left our country in stagnation, we studied and completed dozens of development projects that were promises of years, We promoted quality tourism and promoted our island nationally and internationally, we organized important events, we strengthened and expanded twinning, we brought significant funding to the local community from the LEADER programme.
But we have also faced unprecedented challenges: capital controls, payment freezes, near bankruptcy of the State and exit from the EU, cash freezes, bureaucratic growth, constant reduction of permanent staff, pandemic, etc.
The same electorate honoured us with its vote in 2019 and 2023, rejecting low-level slander, desperate attempts to nullify and level our work, lies and misleading statements, which once again led their initiators to defeat. After all, it has been proven in politics that stumbling blocks only bring down their creators in the end!
At the beginning of our 3rd term, we are very pleased to see all the projects we have financed being completed and we are optimistically looking forward to the start of construction of the new major infrastructure projects for which we have long been preparing: sewerage, water supply, new major redevelopments, port projects, etc. Because it is our firm belief that only with the right infrastructure will our island be able to develop in a balanced and sustainable way, avoiding the mistakes of other tourist destinations that have invested in tourism without having the basic infrastructure.
We are firmly committed to our programme, which received the vote of confidence of the citizens and from the implementation of which no one and nothing can prevent us.
I want to thank all my colleagues, in the party and the Municipality, from 2014 until today, for their systematic commitment to our principles and goals, for their work and their creative contribution to our project. Above all, my family and my wife, as the personal and family price paid by anyone who wants to make a meaningful contribution to the public is enormous...
So we will continue! With vision, program and WORK!»
