Michael Papadopoulos, of Minister for Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy κ. Mr. Ioannis Plakiotakis and of Deputy Minister of Finance Mr Apostolos Vessyropoulos.
Regarding the now licensed Kyllini airport Mr Papadopoulos, Minister of State for Transport and Infrastructure stated:
«The region of the Western Peloponnese is today acquiring the conditions for the creation of an additional infrastructure, which will allow the operation of yet another new means of transport at the port of Kyllini. Together with Kalamata, Corfu and Paxos, but also Patras, a network is steadily developing that can support seaplane flights in the wider region, which has experienced rapid tourist growth in recent years.».
Ο Mayor of Psara Mr. Vratsanos after the approval of the water field referring to the issue stated: «We are very happy about the approval of the Water Field in Psara, the first in the North Aegean, which is an extremely flexible solution to serve seaplane flights for the island's residents and visitors alike. The company «Waterways of Chios Psara & Oinousses», the operator of the waterway, took the initiative to proceed with the waterway approval process and is in close cooperation with our Municipality and the Port Fund for the development of the waterway in the near future.»
Ο Mayor of the municipality of Andravida-Killini, Mr. Yannis Lentzas after the announcement of the waterway permit he said:
«We had the pleasure of receiving the licensing of the Kyllini waterport last week. The Municipal Authority and Hellenic Seaplanes are entering into discussions on the technical issues concerning the smooth operation of the waterport as well as the subsequent steps to be taken in order to bring the new form of transport, seaplanes, which in turn will bring tourism and economic development to the wider region. There is an intention to speed up the procedures both by the Municipal Authority and by the Government itself so that we can ensure the operation of the Kyllini waterport with the new season. Our aim is for Kyllini to become a reference point for Western Greece and the Peloponnese and the operation of the waterport to become a pillar of development of the wider region.
With the new developments the Chairman and CEO of Hellenic Seaplanes, Mr. Nicholas Charalambous reported:
«Today the waterway network has grown by welcoming Psara and Kyllini. In Psara, as an approved Water Area, up to six pairs of flights (embarkation - disembarkation) per seaplane airline are allowed, according to current legislation, to take place daily. In addition to the six pairs of flights, general aviation, air ambulance, fire-fighting, search and rescue and emergency flights are permitted. Psara is an island with a history and a lot of potential in terms of upgrading its tourist identity. The approval of the water field in Psara could be said to “open the dance” for the rest of the North Aegean islands to have a water field or waterport. On the other hand, Kyllini with its strategically important port will play a key role for the interconnection with the waterways of the Ionian Islands and Western Greece but can also provide new tourism products where our country is now very much based, such as cruise tourism and its combination with the touristic flights of seaplanes.
The positive developments for the Kyllini and Psara waterports add to the optimistic news announced during the period of August regarding Porto Heli and Ermionida, as new announcements are expected regarding the licensing and operation of Hellenic Seaplanes' waterports in the Peloponnese, Cyclades and Evia, as well as the preparation of the company's participation in new tenders.
