Delphinium L.
About 500 species belong to the genus dolphinium, some of them impressive ornamental with wonderful colours. There are also hybrid species that are the products of careful and long cultivation.
The genus was so named already by the Ancient Greeks because of the resemblance of the flower to the dolphin, original Greek. Delphis> mtg.
In Greece there are about a dozen species of native dolphin, including the local endemic delphinium hellenicum Pawl. According to Professor A. Giannitsaros (Additions to the Flora of Kythira II, 2004) the southernmost place where this species has been recorded is Kythira.
