Lang Park Stadium will host the opening and closing ceremonies at the 2032 Olympics after the Queensland Government today (18/3) rejected the construction of a new stadium as part of a $2.23 billion project in the city.
The government had put up for consideration a plan to rebuild the city's «Gabba» cricket stadium to host ceremonies and athletics at the Games, as well as the construction of a 55,000-seat stadium at Victoria Park, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation said.
«I don't agree with that recommendation,» Queensland Premier Stephen Miles told reporters in Brisbane.
«When residents are struggling with housing costs, I can't justify them spending A$3.4 billion on a new stadium. Lang Park will become our Olympic stadium. This option will allow us to upgrade it to a standard to host a fantastic opening and closing ceremony.»
Lang Park currently has a capacity of 52,500 spectators and hosts rugby matches and concerts.
Brisbane was awarded in 2021 the right to host the 2032 Olympics.
