Renovation work at the main entrance to Avlemonas is in full swing, but is also taking place amid intense protests. The project, which is funded by the Recovery Fund, is facing a tight deadline, as it must be completed and delivered no later than June 30, so as not to lose the funding.
However, the opening of such a crucial front in the «heart» of June is causing despair among local business owners. In a letter to our publication, a local tourist accommodation owner is sounding the alarm about the impact on tourism.
As he states:
«For several days now, construction work has been underway at the entrance to the village, resulting in a very serious access problem for both residents and visitors. As the owner of a tourist accommodation with active reservations, this is causing inconvenience to guests and creating a negative image for one of Kythira’s most well-known tourist destinations in mid-June.».
The photos he sent us confirm how difficult the situation is. An extensive excavation for the installation of underground utility lines occupies a large portion of the street, restricting the passage of vehicles and pedestrians right in front of adjacent properties.
With the next fifteen days being absolutely critical in determining whether or not funding will be lost, the local community is calling for immediate oversight by the relevant authorities and for the contractor to speed up the work, so that normalcy can be restored in Avlemonas before the tourist season suffers irreparable damage.
